International nonprofit organization United Way recently announced Johnston, Rhode Island-based FM Global as its top benefactor, having contributed more than $1 million in corporate and employee giving during its annual campaign.
FM Global, Euromoney Magazine’s Best Property Insurer, has drawn a nearly 200-year legacy as provider of protection for clients through comprehensive insurance products and property loss prevention engineering services. Operating in more than 120 countries, it holds $4.3 billion of in-force premium (FY2006) and $5.2 billion in policyholders’ surplus (FY2006).
It is also Rhode Island’s largest private company and its top philanthropist, having dedicated a substantial amount of its resources to promote livelihood, self-sufficiency, education, and eradication of hunger. Through the FM Global Foundation, its philanthropic arm, it collaborates and provides financial donations to several charities and nonprofit organizations in the state.
According to FM Global Chairman and CEO Shivan Subramanian, the company’s support for United Way is the best and most compelling solution to sharing their financial resources to places and communities that badly need it. As a global risk manager, it complements United Way’s goals of creating long-lasting change in the community by coming up with ways to prevent problems from occurring.
United Way-RI’s president and CEO commended FM Global for its generosity and commitment to corporate citizenship, calling the $1 million campaign a “noteworthy milestone” that comes at a significant time considering the economic hardships that face communities.
During a five-year period, FM Global has raised more than $4 million for United Way through a comprehensive philanthropic program involving its employees, retirees, corporate donors, and special fundraisers. Its unique matching program gives $2 for every $1 worth of employee donation.
For the past ten years, the foundation has donated more than $21 million to educational, civic and cultural institutions, hospitals, and the United Way. FM Global employees and retirees have raised more than $9 million in donations through its matching program, and rendered hundreds of volunteer hours working with preferred charities.
